The need for us all to take better care of the planet

the World

If the virus has done nothing else it has highlighted the need to protect our future. The need for us all to take better care of the planet.

The pandemic has accelerated our thinking, thinking that we need to operate in a new way in order to have a future. During the lockdown I read that carbon emissions decreased globally by 17% and – thanks to you tube – we could all see the planets wildlife reclaiming their spaces. Do you remember the joy of seeing the fish swimming around in the Venice canals?  This has got many consumers thinking – how can we protect our planet in the longer term?

For businesses we need to look at the environmental boundaries, social boundaries and the commercial opportunities for which we come up with a business model.

A greener future for retail will come from partnerships. Retailers must work with the brands they stock to improve their sustainability and ethical credentials. High volume fast fashion retailers in particular must work towards a more sustainable future for the industry. Brands must get into the psyche of the millennial eco conscious consumer and research what they are looking for from the brands they buy.

There is a huge appetite to ditch ‘fast fashionʼ. In a bid to improve public perception, I read that Zara  announced their sustainability goals, vowing that all of their clothes will be made from 100% sustainable fabric by 2025.

Another way that retailers are tackling the waste issue is by offering rental and subscription services. These innovative rental services facilitate the transition to a circular economy. With more of us making sustainable choices, particularly in areas such as fashion and furniture where tastes change so often, items can be returned to the retailer and reused, or recycled in the correct manner.

Luxury retail is also having a big re think on how luxury is sold after seeing  a huge leap in the second hand luxury market as well as renting.

This year there is a big focus on sustainability and reducing our waste in fashion.

The next decade will also see a big rise in people up-cycling, repairing and personalising their home accessories.

As a society we need to do more of make do and mend. People will want to learn the skills required and this is a great opportunity for the high street to work with the education sector and fill empty floor space with practical workshops.
